Short answer: for classic mithai made with milk and pure desi ghee in Ghaziabad, go to Loknath Sweets in Gali Loknath, Ghantaghar (Naya Ganj). The same family has made sweets there since 1952. Order the Special Milk Cake first. It is the original 1952 recipe. Then have rabri, rasmalai or a glass of lassi at the counter.
What makes mithai "the best"? A quick checklist
Before naming any shop, it helps to know what to look for. These are the questions worth asking at any sweet shop, including ours:
- Which fat is it cooked in? Good mithai is made in pure desi ghee. Vanaspati and palm oil are cheaper and easy to hide inside a sweet, but you can taste the difference.
- Is the milk real? Milk cake, peda and burfi should start from full cream milk, cooked down slowly in a kadhai. They should not start from a shortcut mix.
- How fresh is it? Ask when the batch was made. Fresh milk sweets are best eaten within a few days.
- Is it too sweet? Extra sugar usually covers up weak ingredients. Good mithai should taste of milk, ghee and nuts first.
- Can you see the full menu? A good shop is happy to show you everything it makes and answer your questions.
How Loknath Sweets measures up
- Since 1952: family-run, with the same recipes, in the same lane of old Ghaziabad.
- Pure desi ghee: every mithai is made in pure desi ghee. No palm oil, ever.
- 100% full cream milk for milk cakes and milk sweets.
- Pure peanut oil is the only oil our namkeen is fried in.
- 100% vegetarian: everything we make is veg.
More on this: why there is no palm oil in our mithai.
What to order at Loknath Sweets
1. Special Milk Cake (start here)
The Special Milk Cake is the recipe the shop started with in 1952, and it is still the one people come back for. Full cream milk is slow-cooked until it sets into soft, grainy, golden-brown pieces. If you only try one thing, make it this.
Also try the flavoured versions: Thandai Milk Cake, Shahi Mewa Milk Cake (loaded with dry fruits) and Gulkand Milk Cake (with rose petal gulkand).
2. Fresh counter sweets: rabri, rasmalai and chena kheer
These are made fresh for the shop counter. Regulars mention them most often in their reviews. Have them with a glass of lassi. They are not shipped outside Ghaziabad, because fresh milk sweets do not travel well.
3. Dhodha Burfi, Kaju Katli and Mathura Peda
Dhodha Burfi is a dense, fudgy, dark-brown burfi made from milk and dry fruits. Kaju Katli and Mathura Peda are the safe crowd-pleasers for guests and gifts.
4. Desi ghee laddoos, Punjabi Patisa and Amritsari Pinni
Motichoor, Jodhpuri and Besan Dryfruit Laddoo, flaky Punjabi Patisa and the winter favourite Amritsari Pinni. All of them are made in pure desi ghee.
5. Namkeen for the chai table
Matthi, namak para, khasta kachori and samosa, all fried in pure peanut oil.
